Communicating recalls or safety concerns through qualified processes
Route creator brand safety reports to qualified owners, check Australian reporting duties and give affected customers clear, approved recall information.
undefined
When a creator brand receives a credible consumer product safety report, preserve the details and consider holding potentially affected sales while the risk is assessed.
The creator’s channel can help reach customers. A personal apology or reassuring post cannot substitute for a safety assessment, required notifications or a usable consumer message.
Record the concern and control the offer
Capture what was reported, when and by whom, and identify the product, make, model and distinguishing features. Record serial or batch numbers, manufacturing dates, product codes and any account of injury or near miss with the case (ACCC Product Safety).
Identify where the product is still offered: the brand store, marketplaces, retailers and scheduled creator content. Assign someone authority to hold potentially affected stock and pause relevant listings while the team investigates.
Do not wait for several complaints before escalating a plausible hazard. A support agent should not decide from a photograph that every unit is safe.
Assess the risk using information about the product, defect or dangerous characteristic, and hazard. Conduct risk assessments to understand the risk, failure rate and urgency of the recall, and keep good records of the steps taken (ACCC Product Safety).
Use the ACCC recall reporting process
For voluntary recalls of consumer goods, section 128 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 covers notification requirements. Under the Australian Consumer Law, suppliers must submit the recall notification form within 2 days of taking recall action (ACCC Product Safety). A separate mandatory report is due within 2 days of becoming aware of a death, serious injury or serious illness associated with a supplied consumer product (ACCC Product Safety).
Submit the recall notification through the ACCC Product Safety website’s recall notification form, and use its online form for a mandatory report. If in doubt whether a mandatory report is required, submit one to meet the 2-day deadline (ACCC Product Safety).
For a mandatory report, complete the form to the best of your knowledge; you can provide further information later (ACCC Product Safety).
Record who decided the reporting route, when they became aware of the relevant facts and what was submitted. Do not tell customers a notification has been made until the responsible owner confirms it.

Write the customer message from approved facts
A recall notice should let people identify the product and act. Include a product description and picture, distinguishing details such as make, model or affected batch, the reason for recall, the hazard and how it could cause injury, whether injuries have occurred, the remedy, what customers should do and how to contact the supplier (ACCC Product Safety).
State the remedy offered and explain how to claim it. Australian Consumer Law remedies include repair, replacement or refund; for unsafe goods with a major failure, consumers can reject them and ask for a replacement or refund (ACCC Product Safety). Have the safety and regulatory owners approve the message and use the words agreed on the recall notice published on ACCC Product Safety (ACCC Product Safety).
Avoid unsupported reassurance that the problem is rare or limited. Keep the website, retailer instructions, direct messages and creator post consistent with the approved notice. Social media is one channel to consider, and all communications should use the words agreed on the recall notice published on the ACCC Product Safety website (ACCC Product Safety).
Reach people beyond the creator’s followers
Use purchase records to contact affected buyers directly where possible, and coordinate with retailers and marketplaces that sold the goods; a marketplace may help contact customers and support access to a remedy (ACCC Product Safety). Use the channels through which the product was promoted, but do not assume every buyer follows the creator or will see one post. Record who was contacted and which questions remain unanswered.
ACCC recall guidance recommends reviewing reach and response, updating the plan when new risk information arrives and maintaining a process for recall questions (ACCC Product Safety). Assign staff to the contact route before publishing a notice. The creator can share approved instructions and point people to the full message; they should not improvise a hazard assessment in comments.
Keep tracking the recall until the responsible team has evidence that the risk is being addressed and customers can obtain the stated remedy. A corrected caption alone is not a safety resolution.
